2010 Memories: Comic-Cons

Many of my most significant memories of 2010 involve Comic-Con (both San Diego and New York). Here are the highlights. In no particular order:

Panels

The White Collar and Psych panels were awesome, but my favorite was the Rifftrax panel (moderated by the awesome Veronica Belmont), which included a hilarious live riff of a ridiculous short called "Buying Food."

(SDCC) Geek Girl Supreme Veronica Belmont and the Rifftrax guys.

I got to meet the riffers (Rifftraxers?) themselves, Mystery Science Theater 3000 alums Michael J. Nelson, Bill Corbett, and Kevin Murphy.

(SDCC) With Kevin, Bill, and Mike from Rifftrax. What's up with that look on my face?

People

* Todd Stashwick, who isn't anything like Dr. Scott Borman, and Dennis Calero, who is. (Just kidding, Dennis.)

(SDCC) Todd Stashwick and Dennis Calero: partners in evil.

* Stephen Tobolowsky. I was disappointed to learn that he can't turn things to gold in real life.

(SDCC) Ned Ryerson? Bing!

* The ~~evil~~ great David H. Lawrence and the lovely Mia.

(SDCC) In the clutches of the Puppet Master.

* Foz McDermott. Hell of a guy.

(SDCC) "The Mighty Foz" himself.

* Milo Ventimiglia. The guy knows how to handle a camera.

(SDCC) Milo sporting the crewcut, and me looking goofy.

(NYCC) Milo's hair is longer, and I am looking goofier.

* Brea Grant. Wonderful, as advertised.

(NYCC) One of these days, someone will take a picture of
Brea and me in which I actually look halfway decent.

* Brea's brother Zane is awesome in his own right.

(SDCC) With the Grant siblings. (Note to self: wear smaller shirts.)

* Interviewing Brea and Zane at NYCC was definitely one of the highlights of my year.

(NYCC) Awesomeness runs in the Grant family.

* My Twitter peeps at SDCC. Notably absent is @TsarMaxii, no doubt off doing something involving either bacon or murder. Or both.

The Convention Center fell to our superior numbers.

My super-awesome waffle recipe

My Super-Awesome Waffle Recipe

(mostly, but not entirely, copied from a bag of Arrowhead Mills® Buckwheat Pancake & Waffle mix)

1 cup waffle mix (pref. Arrowhead Mills® Buckwheat Pancake & Waffle mix)
1 egg, beaten or egg substitute
1 tbsp. oil (pref. canola or safflower)
1 tbsp. sugar, honey, or artificial sweetener
1 cup (plus 1 tbsp.) milk, soy milk, rice milk, or water
2 tbsp. Bob's Red Mill Flaxseed Meal
1 lb. steel, tin, lead, or tungsten (if available)*

* not recommended

1) Stir all ingredients together (in bowl, bucket, large hat, etc.) only until lumps disappear.
3) Pour batter on waffle iron (duh), cook as per manufacturer's instructions (or however the hell you want to do it)
4) Add butter, syrup, powdered sugar, whipped cream, molasses, peanut butter, catsup, soy sauce, Cheez Whiz, whiskey, etc. to taste
5) Enjoy (or else!)

For variety, try adding wild blueberries or chopped apples after mixing!

John directed one of my favorite comedies (comedy/drama actually), Planes, Trains, and Automobiles (Roger Ebert's "Great Movies" review is here). He also wrote for National Lampoon magazine, which only makes him cooler. His films made lots of folks happy, and he'll be missed.
